My good friend Amanda is rolling into town this evening, straight from playing her tuba during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. (She's an emergency room physician who plays the tuba and has a fixation with the American South. Needless to say, one of the coolest people ever.)
She's never been to Birmingham, and will only be here for about 36 hours. That's a short time to experience The Magic City, and the pressure is on because Amanda is coming to us all the way from Australia.
I love to show off Birmingham, and do it all the time when people come to visit. But with such a short amount of time and such a special visitor, I want to be strategic about our plans. Here's my list of what I'm thinking.
Birminghamians, what am I forgetting? Remember, we can't do everything.
What's on your "must-see" Birmingham list?
Wedenesday evening: shrimp and grits at Casa Street (down time because she's coming off Fat Tuesday and a long drive)
Breakfast at: Urban Standard (?)
Start off at Vulcan, with a view of The Magic City and intro to our history
Potentially on to Sloss Furnaces for a self-guided tour (which I've never done)
Lunch: This is a tough one. Thinking BBQ, maybe Saw's. Somewhat difficult because dinner plans are tied up to an Irish concert at OLS. Tough, tough, tough.
Visit to the Alabama Booksmith (she's a huge reader and loves Southern literature)
Civil Rights Museum
Walk around Railroad Park (time TBD)
Dinner: Brock McGuire Band(catered by Nabeel's) @OLS
